A name's root number is the sum of its letters, reduced to a single digit. Root 9 is the answer for 56 of the 536 names we publish — 10% of the corpus — and this page shows the arithmetic, the compound readings, the fields the tradition marks favourable, and every one of those names.
Read straight out of the table our scan computes from.
Chaldean keeps the two-digit total as well as the single digit, and reads the two differently — the root describes the name, the compound describes how it is likely to go.
| Compound | Traditional reading | Names here |
|---|---|---|
| 18 | Material progress through conflict — caution against treachery | 41 |
| 27 | Sceptre — reward through productive intellect | 4 |
11 of the 56 names below sit outside this table — their letters total under 10 or over 34, the range the Chaldean compound readings cover. Those names are read by the root number alone, and the “compound reading” column is left empty rather than filled with the nearest thing.
The lists a live check compares a founder's stated industry against.
And the fields the same tradition marks against root 9:
Type an industry into the name check and we match your own words against these lists — “fintech” is read against banking, “edtech” against education — and report favourable, neutral, or not traditionally favoured. An industry we cannot map honestly comes back neutral rather than guessed at. This tile can lower a score; it can never register a conflict, because a root number is a cultural reading and a registered trademark is a fact.
Reduce the day of the month the same way you reduce the name.
| Date sum | Dates of the month | How many |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3, 12, 21, 30 | 4 |
| 6 | 6, 15, 24 | 3 |
| 9 · the number’s own | 9, 18, 27 | 3 |
Traditionally this runs as a check on a name already chosen, not as a reason to choose a birth date. Only the day is used — the month and the year do not enter the sum.
Every letter, its Chaldean value, and the two steps that get to 9. Check it against the letter table.
N(5) + E(5) + E(5) + L(3) = 18
18 → 1 + 8 = 9
Neel therefore carries root 9, and a live check reads it under ♂ Mars. Its own page — Neel — carries the same number alongside the name in ten scripts.
The same name in the Pythagorean system: N(5) + E(5) + E(5) + L(3) = 18, 1 + 8 = 9 → root 9. The two systems happen to agree on this name. They often do not — the section below explains why.
Every one recomputed with the same function the live scan calls. Devanagari is transliterated by our own engine; a meaning appears only where we have verified one.

The two systems in common use disagree on 16 of the 26 letters, which is why a name that reads as 9 here can read as something else on another site. Pythagorean numbers the alphabet in order — A is 1, B is 2, up to I at 9, then J starts again at 1. Chaldean does not follow the alphabet at all: it groups letters by sound, so A, I, J, Q and Y share the value 1, and it never assigns 9 to any letter, that number being held back as sacred. A 9 can only ever arrive in a Chaldean reading through reduction, never from a single letter.
They also stop in different places. Chaldean holds on to the compound total and reads it — 18 as material progress through conflict and 27 as sceptre — and only then reduces to the root, so the reading has two layers. Pythagorean reduces straight to one digit, singling out 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers that are left unreduced. And Chaldean is applied to the name as it is actually used and spoken, which is why we compute it on the spelling you type; Pythagorean practice is usually to use the full name as recorded at birth.
Of the 56 names on this page, 8 come out as 9 in the Pythagorean system too and 48 land somewhere else. Neither system is a correction of the other. Naam Dekho computes Chaldean only, and prints every letter value on the numerology index so you can always tell which system a number came from.
9 is the root of any name whose letter values total 9, or total a number that reduces to 9. Chaldean tradition places it under Mars ♂. The detail sits in the compound total before it is reduced: 18 is read as material progress through conflict and 27 is read as sceptre. Of the 536 names Naam Dekho publishes, 56 come out as root 9.
Mars, written ♂. Chaldean numerology assigns one of nine planetary rulers to each root, and that assignment is the whole of what the "planet" means here — it is not read from a birth chart and has nothing to do with where Mars actually was when anyone was born. A rashi comes from the Moon's position; a root number comes from the spelling of the name.
The tradition marks defence, sports, surgery and manufacturing of cutting tools favourable for root 9, and hospitality unfavourable. In a live check this is one tile of many, and it is deliberately weak: numerology can return "favourable" or "not traditionally favoured", never a conflict, so it can nudge a score and can never fail a name. A trademark already registered in your class, or a domain someone else owns, is what actually stops a name.
Root 9 is traditionally read as harmonious with dates whose digits reduce to 3, 6 or 9 — that is 10 dates of the month: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30. The date is reduced exactly the way the name is: 23 becomes 2 + 3 = 5. Only the day of the month is used, so the month and year do not change the answer.
Almost always because it uses the Pythagorean system rather than the Chaldean one. Pythagorean numbers the alphabet straight through — A is 1, B is 2, on to I at 9, then it starts again — while Chaldean assigns values by sound and never uses 9 at all, treating it as sacred. 16 of the 26 letters are valued differently by the two systems, so the totals rarely match, and a name that is 9 here can be almost anything elsewhere. Naam Dekho computes Chaldean only, and publishes every letter value on the numerology index so you can work out which system any number came from.
The root number is one tile. The check also runs domains, social handles, marketplaces, the MCA company register and all 45 trademark classes.
Check a nameWhere the names on this page fall in the Avakahada chakra, counted by first syllable. The root number comes from every letter; the nakshatra comes from the first sound alone, so the two are independent readings of the same name.
